Thunderbird and 101 access…… Not an Option !

The City of Scottsdale is trying to add an exit ramp and 4-lane road off of Thunderbird and the 101 which will decrease the value of our homes and make the neighborhood less safe for our children; we want to make this very clear that this is not an option!

Access to the Scottsdale Airpark has been a recurring issue for many years. Traffic to the airpark for commercial use has relied on Scottsdale Rd, Hayden Rd, Frank Lloyd Wright and Raintree, and of course the 101 Freeway.

As the projections for future years of airpark traffic increase, we find that the conflict of commercial and residential traffic needs to be addressed.

Although we understand that the Scottsdale airpark is part of the overall growth of the City, it is important that we also recognize the primary need to preserve the residential neighborhoods that surround this area.

City planners consider all possibilities as solutions to their problem and sometimes ideas that may look good on an aerial photo may not work in reality.

It is up to us as a community to make it very clear that Thunderbird and 101 is not an option. If the residents say nothing then it will be assumed that there are no objections and the plans will proceed. Don’t let this happen.

The City Looks for solutions

The City has made a suggestion that an entrance/exit ramp at the 101 Freeway and Thunderbird Rd be considered. This would also require the widening of Thunderbird Rd (4 lanes) West through to Hayden Rd. Possibly even further West of Hayden Rd and finally connecting to the Airpark. At the very least this is an irresponsible suggestion that pays no consideration to the surrounding residents. This will cause a negative change in our neighborhood that no resident would ever willingly agree to.

How does this affect the your neighborhood ?

An access point at Thunderbird would funnel an enormous amount of traffic into the residential area bound by Thunderbird, Scottsdale Rd, Cactus and the 101.

Thunderbird would become a 4 lane road from the 101 to Hayden and possibly even further West in order to connect to the airpark.

The integrity of the residential neighborhood will be jeopardized, leaving walking trails, horse trails and Northsight Park separated from the rest of the community.

The increased traffic will also create a dangerous environment for residents walking, riding horses, and bike riding. This is especially true for children in the neighborhood.

As the traffic flow increases so will crime in these areas.

Years of noisy, dusty construction along with all the outside traffic it brings.

As the neighborhood becomes a stepping stone for airpark commercial traffic, the value of homes will decrease.

This suggestion would also create cut through traffic from Thunderbird to Cactus via 84th street, causing a ripple effect of problems to the South past Cactus and even through to residents  bordering 84th St down to Shea Boulevard.

What can we do?

This is your neighborhood and without your voice the City will assume that there are no objections to their plans. The only reason that we have such a beautiful quiet community is because people fought for this when the 101 was built. It is our responsibility to follow through and preserve our community.

Register yourself as a concerned resident via in order to be kept up to date with any changes and also to be part of a larger organized voice.

We will be keeping an open dialogue with the Transportation Committee at the City. This website will be updated to reflect any advancement to the issue. Attend meetings at the city whenever you can and voice your opinion as an individual. Let your friends and neighbors know about this website.
